The U.S. national debt has more than doubled since the Great Recession of 2008-09.

The confluence of increased debt, low GDP growth after the pandemic, and higher interest rates since 2020 have changed fiscal dynamics for the United States. Unfortunately, pinning our hopes on robust economic growth as the solution to the debt problems may be unrealistic.

With projected higher future interest rates, debt service becomes a much larger part of the U.S. national budget, potentially squeezing out discretionary spending on areas like military, education, and a variety of social programs. Concurrently, Social Security programs are projected to be underfunded without significant changes. This may look bleak, but there are policy options and decisions that could turn this outlook around.

Join us in Denver for an exciting evening as we examine:

  • The U.S. debt landscape
  • Possible strategies and policy options to control growth of U.S. debt while balancing fiscal responsibility in discretionary spending and meeting Medicare and Social Security commitments
  • The political reality of these different options
